The Task Force was initially created to address an urgent need for student representation in the in our founders’ hometown school district. At first, our efforts were focused on drafting and advocating for a Student Constitution to protect and advance student rights in the school district. Our campaign led to a landslide victory in a school-wide referendum, demonstrating the power of student voice and participatory democracy.

Following January 6th, 2021 and the threat of more anti-democratic political violence, our mission evolved towards building nonpartisan grassroots coalitions to educate and empower students to defend democracy. Almost universally, American democracy is perceived to be on the decline. We believe that this erosion of faith requires institutional reform (i.e. a bottom-up approach leveraging community action in the form of advocacy and referendums). That is the need that catalyzed the Task Force and drives our current work.
